From Dr. Andrus...

I became the principal at Weaver Elementary in 2001. Weaver Elementary School is a beautiful, two-story building near historic Grant Beach Park in Northwest Springfield.  It has 13 classroom teachers along with specialty teachers and support staff members.  Weaver School was named after Joseph Weaver , Mayor of Springfield from 1875 – 1876 and a school board member from 1870 – 1873.  The building was originally named the 6th Ward School and was opened in 1887 on the corner of Division and Main Street .  It was renamed Weaver Elementary as it became part of the City of Springfield when North Springfield and South Springfield merged in 1888.  In 1931, a new school was built a few blocks away on Douglas and Division.  The original school was later demolished in 1990 but the property is still owned by the Springfield School District .  Weaver Elementary radiates a feeling of caring and warmth from the Italian terrazzo floors and the distinctive cupola on top, to the mosaic artwork and hand-painted murals in the building.

In the Fall of 2007, Weaver School broke ground on an extensive addition to the current building.  The new addition will include an art room, music room, special ed. room, a book room, additional restrooms, new offices, a computer lab and 7 additional classrooms.  The tentative completion date is January 2009.  Students graduating from fifth grade at Weaver continue on to Pipkin Middle School and Central High School .

At Weaver Elementary we believe that collaborating with various groups helps make a positive difference in the lives of our students.  Assemblies of God – Financial Division, The Springfield News Leader, Springfield-Greene County Park Board, Southern Missouri Containers, Central Assembly of God, Southland Christian Church, and O’Reilly’s Automotive are Partners In Education for Weaver .  They support Book Festivals, Meet Your Teacher celebrations, book clubs, as well as contributing incentives and donations to support attendance, encourage good character, and assist students in need.  In addition, several of our partners are lunch buddies or tutors each week for students.  Through a collaborative approach we expect to make a difference in the education of our students.

Weaver

The need for all children to obtain a solid foundation of academic skills in reading, writing, and math, as well as character, is a primary goal for Weaver’s future.  Students and staff must continue improving student achievement in these areas.  Each year our students in second grade to take the Terra Nova test (Graph 1).  As you can see, we were very pleased to see our scores increase significantly in 2008. Our students have continued to make progress in Math and Communication Arts on the MAP (Missouri Achievement Program) test.  Weaver School has met Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) every year with the exclusion of Communication Arts in 2005.

While times have changed over the years, Weaver has maintained a sense of integrity, continues to offer a quality education, and meet a variety of challenges as the years pass.  The school, staff, and community offer a warm and welcoming culture to all.  Highly professional, knowledgeable and dedicated staff members make Weaver a caring environment where children can dream great dreams of amazing things.
