Skills for the Week
of September 26-302
Reading Second grade is an exciting year for reading growth! We transition from learning to read to reading to learn. We will be focusing on important themes in reading this year including: The Reading Life, Making Connections, Visualizing, Making Inferences About Characters, Exploring Nonfiction, and Exploring Important Ideas. Second graders have reading homework every night including weekends and holidays and vacations! Every second grader should spend 20 minutes OR MORE reading daily with an adult. In order to foster important comprehension skills, students should be able to summarize what they have read. A summary is a short retelling of the important events from the beginning, middle, and end of the story. Our STAR Reading Incentive Program has started for September! All Sequiota students are expected to participate in this program. DON'T FORGET TO RECORD YOUR DAILY READING MINUTES ON YOUR MONTHLY STAR READING CALENDAR. CALENDARS MUST BE TURNED IN BY LISTED DUE DATE OR MINUTES WILL NOT QUALIFY!

Writing Get those pencils sharpened and ready to go because our second grade writers are going to have a busy year exploring The Writing Process! Our writing goals include Descriptive Writing, Narrative Writing, Friendly Letters & Messages, Directions, Persuasive Writing, and Expository Writing. We hope you enjoyed reading your child's bubble gum story at Open House. It will be great to keep and compare their final story at the end of second grade to see how much they've progressed. Second graders need to write on a daily basis at school and at home. Writing projects could consist of letters, labels, poems, stories, reports, notes, lists, directions, or recipes.

Spelling Spelling words will come home in Homework Folders on the first day of the week. Second graders need to study and practice these spelling concepts and words with an adult nightly. Students that demonstrate spelling proficiency consistently will have the opportunity to participate in higher level spelling curriculum. We hope to see a transfer of spelling skills from the test to their every day writing. |
Math Our units of study in math include: Numbers and Routines, Addition and Subtraction Facts, Place Value/Money/Time, Addition and Subtraction Strategies, 3-D and 2-D Shapes, Whole Number Operations and Number Stories, Patterns and Rules, Fractions, Measurement, Decimals and Place Value, Whole Number Operations Revisited, and Year End Reviews and Extensions. Please take advantage of the many opportunities to help your child see math as part of your every day life. It takes on new meaning when children see the importance of knowing how to tell time, count money, use a calendar etc. Students should be practicing addition and subtraction math facts so they know them with quick recall. |
Science Our units of study will coincide with our reading and/or Current Events, therefore we will not always have a Science skill to report weekly. We have started a unit rocks and soil thist week. The students are very excited!
|
Social Studies Our units of study will coincide with our reading and/or Current Events, therefore we will not always have a Social Studies skill to report weekly. Our Weekly Readers provide an excellent opportunity for you to read non-fiction text with your child while reviewing what they are learning.

Character Word for September is Courtesy We are looking for two students in each class to recognize for their exemplary display of courtesy for our September Character Education assembly.

Work Habits Second graders are expected to be able to focus on a given task for a reasonable amount of time. They are also expected to listen to and follow directions the first time. These two essential work habits are crucial for promoting a classroom atmosphere that is conducive for learning. We continue to struggle with students that would rather talk than focus on their work. We appreciate your support and follow-through at home as we work together to creative attentive, engaged students.

Other Although sandals and flip flops are cooler on warm days, we strongly recommend tennis shoes as the safest footwear for school. Please remember our classrooms are PEANUT FREE due to students with peanut allergies. Snacks for your child or for the entire class should not contain peanuts or peanut oil, or be processed where peanuts/oil has been used. Planning ahead...we are in need of half-gallon milk cartons (not the plastic jugs) for a special project in April. Please send rinsed out cartons to school. We are also going to need an assortment of colorful buttons. Start watching garage sales and clearance racks! THANK YOU! THANK YOU FOR THE ITEMS FROM OUR WISH LISTS! We have awesome, generous parents.
