Each year, Missouri school children in grades 4-6 vote for their favorite book from a list of nominated titles.

Berlin, Eric. The Potato Chip Puzzles.  Winston and his friends enter an all-day puzzle contest to win fifty-thousand dollars for their school, but they must also figure out who is trying to keep them from winning.

Jonell, Lynne. Secret of Zoom. Christina lives in a big, old stone mansion on the edge of a dark forest surrounded by barbed wire. Deep within the forest is the laboratory where her father works--and where her mother was blown to bits years ago. Christina's father knows just how dangerous the world can be, so he keeps her safe at home, forbidding her from talking to the very interesting orphans down the road. But when an orphan boy named Taft talks to her , she's thrilled to help him search for a secret tunnel. But soon she discovers there's more to the orphanage, the lab, and the mystery of her mother's accident than she ever suspected. Sinister things are in the works--and the secret of zoom is the most dangerous secret of all!

Kehret, Peg. Runaway Twin. Thirteen-year-old Sunny runs away from her current foster parent in search of her twin sister, from whom she was separated ten years earlier. On the way, she ll face a tornado, bullies, and a stray dog and the fact that her sister may not be who Sunny hoped she would be.

LaFleur, Suzanne. Love, Aubrey. A beautifully written and deeply moving middle-grade novel with characters to cherish and a story that deals with tragedy and loss in a fresh way. Aubrey has suffered an unbelievable loss, and goes to live with her grandmother in Vermont in order to heal. There she makes new friends, learns to cope with what has happened, and begins to figure out how to move on. Readers will fall in love with Aubrey from page one, and hold their breath until the very end, when she has to make one of the biggest decisions of her life.

Lupica, Mike. Million-Dollar Throw. Everyone calls Nate Brodie "Brady" because he's a New England quarterback, just like his idol, Tom Brady. And now he's got a chance to win a million dollars by throwing one pass through a target at halftime in the Patriots' Thanksgiving night game. More than anything, Nate's family needs the money - his dad's been downsized, his mom's working two jobs, and they're on the verge of losing their house. The worry is more weight than a 13-year-old can bear, and it's affecting his playing for his own football team. Suddenly the boy with the golden arm is having trouble completing a pass . . . but can he make the one that really counts?

Mass, Wendy. 11 Birthdays. Amanda’s eleventh birthday should have been a happy occasion. Instead she’s dressed in an itchy costume her mother picked out for her Hollywood-themed party (Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz, even though the flying monkeys have always creeped her out). Meanwhile, across town, her ex-best friend, Leo, is celebrating their joint birthday with a huge bash that includes a hypnotist, a football star, a giant iguana, and a rock band. SO not fair! Amanda can’t wait for the day AFTER her birthday so she can stop thinking about the fight that led her and Leo to have separate parties for the first time in their lives. There’s just one problem. The next day is her birthday all over again.In this hilarious and touching adventure, Amanda must figure out how to get unstuck, in more ways than one.

Messner, Kate. Brilliant Fall of Gianna Z. Gianna Z has less than one week to collect, identify, and creatively display 25 leaves for her science project--or else she won't be able to compete in the upcoming cross-country race. As the deadline for her leaf project draws near, life keeps getting in the way. Some things are within Gee's control, like her own procrastination, but others aren't, like Biana Rinaldi's attempts at sabotage and Nonna's declining health. If it weren't for her best friend Zig, Gee wouldn't have a chance at finishing. His knowledge of trees and leaves in their rural Vermont town comes in very handy, as does his loyalty to Gee. But when Nonna disappears one afternoon, things like leaves and cross-country meets suddenly seem less important.

Naylor, Phyllis Reynolds. Faith, Hope, and Ivy June. From the author of the Newbery Medal winner "Shiloh" comes a story of two girls from different regions of Kentucky who are brought together in an exchange program. They soon learn they are more alike than different and find strength in each other.

Parry, Rosanne. Heart of a Shepherd. When Brother's dad is shipped off to Iraq, along with the rest of his reserve unit, Brother must help his grandparents keep the ranch going. He's determined to maintain it just as his father left it, in the hope that doing so will ensure his father's safe return. The hardships Brother faces will not only change the ranch, but also reveal his true calling.

Pitchford, Dean. Captain Nobody. When Newt NewmanÂ's football-star brother, Chris, is knocked into a coma during the biggest game of the season, NewtÂ's two best friends keep his mind off of the accident by helping him create the ultimate Halloween costume: Captain Nobody. Newt feels strong and confident in his new getup, so he keeps wearing it after Halloween is over. Soon Newt assumes the role of a hero in a string of exploits that include foiling a robbery and saving a planeload of passengers. But will Captain Nobody be able to save the one person he cares about most?

Platt, Chris. Storm Chaser. For thirteen-year-old Jessie, living with her family on the dusty Wild Hawk Ranch in Nevada can be a bit lonely. Her friend Marybeth lives a few miles away, but she’s two years younger than Jessie and she can sometimes be a pest. But Jessie loves the horses her father and brother break in each summer to sell to local ranchers and rodeo competitors. This year, she is determined to help train the horses, especially when she lays eyes on the wild, paint filly she names Storm Chaser. When Jessie’s father tells her she is still too young to help with the horses, she deliberately disobeys him by working with the filly behind his back. Then a fire destroys the barn and Jessie’s family reluctantly turns their ranch into a vacation dude ranch to earn much-needed money. But Jessie is wary of Ariel, a rude and spoiled city girl who always expects to get her way. When Ariel announces she wants to buy Storm Chaser, Jessie’s already fragile world begins to crack. What can she do to keep her beloved paint from being sold?

Scaletta, Kurtis. Mudville. For twenty-two years, since a fateful baseball game against their rival town, it has rained in Moundville, so when the rai finally stops, twelve-year-old Roy, his friends, and foster brother Strugis dare to face the curse and form a team.
