Congratulations to the Parkview Speech and Debate Squad for ranking in the top 1% of speech and debate programs in the nation.  We recently received notice that we are the 48th largest squad in the United States and we earned membership in the "Society of 300" in the National Forensic League, after earning over 300 memberships and degrees last year.
Parkview Speech and Debate enjoys the proudest tradition of speech and debate in the state of Missouri. We currently have the 2004 National Champions in  Public Forum Debate, Patrick Carver and Emma Bentley.  We have qualified over 130 students to the national tournament in the last 45 years (with 71 qualifying in the last ten years). We have qualified more students to the national tournament than any other school in Missouri and we placed ninth in the nation at the national tournament in 2002 and 10th each year since. We have dozens of state finalists and more state champions than any other school in Missouri. PHS also hosts one of the largest invitational speech and debate tournament in the state of Missouri, the Bob Bilyeu Winter Classic. All of us at Parkview are extremely proud of the tradition our students have built, and we would like for you to be a part of that legacy. Students may compete in Interpretation events (Humorous, Dramatic, Duo, Prose or Poetry Readings, Storytelling), Public Speaking events (Extemporaneous Speaking, Oratory) and Debate (Policy and Lincoln-Douglas). The squad competes in ten invitational tournaments, state, district, and national competition. These tournaments give students the opportunity to perform at very high levels of competition.

Former members of the speech and debate squad at Parkview include prominent community leaders. Our students attend such prestigious universities as Northwestern, Brandeis, Washington University, Georgetown and Princeton.

If a student is simply interested in learning how to speak publicly and "sample" many speaking events, Introductory Speech is the perfect class. To be a member of the Parkview Speech and Debate Squad, a student should enroll in Debate or Oral Interpretation, with permission from Mrs. Wedgeworth, Speech and Debate coach.

Parkview senior Adam Testerman is currently ranked 9th in the nation in the National Forensic League, the national speech and debate organization. He is also--at present--the highest-ranking student from Missouri. Sam Overton is also in the top 100, ranking 54th. Emma Bentley is ranked 93rd.

Patrick Carver & Emma Bentley placed 3rd in the nation in Public Forum Debate at the national tournament in Philadelphia in June. As you may recall, the team won the national championship last year. Samantha Wingo also excelled in Philadelphia, ranking the top 30 in Dramatic Interpretation as a sophomore.

The Parkview squad maintained its rank of 10th in the nation in cumulative rounds of competition at nationals.

Congrats to all!
