The color guard (also known as the flags and rifles) is the auxiliary portion of the marching band.  Practice for guard begins in early summer, long before band camp.  During this time members learn ballet basics, jazz steps, flag basics, and rifle movements.  They also learn the choreography that will be used with the band during marching season (September, October, and November).  The purpose of the choreography is to interpret the music the band is playing while adding visual excitement to the show.  Once school begins, guard practices in the mornings with the marching band.  The guard then performs with the band at pep assemblies, varsity home football games, at competitions around the state, and in parades.  In addition, members participate in Winter Guard competitions as a performance group during the months of January, February and March.
