Congratulations to the Parkview Speech and Debate Squad for winning two state championships at the MSHSAA State Tournament this weekend:Zack Perry—State Champion, Storytelling. Zack Perry and Christian Weaver—State Champions, Duet Acting. Zack Perry is the only Parkview student to win two state championships in the past 15 years (maybe ever!) and the only Viking to do so in the same year! Also placing were Thao Anh Mai and Aaron Sowards—4th place, Public Forum Debate. This brings Parkview's total state championships to 27—the most in the state of Missouri by 10! Parkview Speech and Debate enjoys the proudest tradition of speech and debate in the state of Missouri. We have qualified more students to the national tournament than any other school in Missouri. We have dozens of state finalists and more state champions than any other school in Missouri. PHS also hosts one of the largest invitational speech and debate tournament in the state of Missouri, the Bob Bilyeu Winter Classic. All of us at Parkview are extremely proud of the tradition our students have built, and we would like for you to be a part of that legacy. Students may compete in Interpretation events (Humorous, Dramatic, Duo, Prose or Poetry Readings, Storytelling), Public Speaking events (Extemporaneous Speaking, Oratory) and Debate (Policy and Lincoln-Douglas). The squad competes in ten invitational tournaments, state, district, and national competition. These tournaments give students the opportunity to perform at very high levels of competition. Former members of the speech and debate squad at Parkview include prominent community leaders. Our students attend such prestigious universities as Northwestern, Brandeis, Washington University, Georgetown and Princeton. If a student is simply interested in learning how to speak publicly and "sample" many speaking events, Introductory Speech is the perfect class. To be a member of the Parkview Speech and Debate Squad, a student should enroll in Debate or Oral Interpretation, with permission from Mrs. Wedgeworth, Speech and Debate coach.
