Delaware Elementary kicks off ‘Double Nickel' anniversary celebration
||Delaware Elementary School third-graders made old fashioned holiday gifts on Friday, Dec. 16, to kick-off the school's “Double Nickel” anniversary celebration. Delaware , 1505 S. Delaware Ave. , opened in 1951. The celebration marks the school's 55th year. Third-grade teacher Patsy Summers and second-grade teacher Leah Lee received a grant from the Foundation for Springfield Public Schools to fund the celebration|
project that incorporates school history into social studies and communication arts.
As part of the celebration, Summers assigned her students to connect with the Delaware community during winter break by asking alumni, former staff and neighborhood residents to share their memories of Delaware and how the school and the neighborhood has changed in the past 55 years.
All students will have an opportunity to create their own memory books to contribute to the Double Nickel project.
