Learning Styles

Individuals perceive and process information in very different ways. For some, auditory input is most valuable; others rely upon a visual style. Still others learn through kinesthetic means or some students may use a combination of all three.

WHAT IS YOUR CHILD'S LEARNING STYLE?

At the beginning of each school year, the guidance counselor will administer a learning styles inventory to all students grades 2nd - 5th.  This information will be shared with the student as well as the teacher.  Students will understand the diverse learning needs of their classroom community by being accepting & encouraging of individual learning styles . The inventory will focus on the auditory learning style, the visual learning style, and the kinesthetic learning style.  Feel free to stop by the counselor's office to discuss your child's learning style!!

Auditory Learners
Auditory learners  benefit from traditional teaching techniques. Many teachers use a lecture-style forum, presenting information by talking to their students. Regulating voice tone, inflection, and body language will help all students maintain interest and attention. Auditory learners succeed when directions are read aloud, speeches are required, or information is presented and requested verbally.

Visual Learners
Some students use a visual learning style: they understand better when information is shown to them using different visual mediums.  Visual learners benefit from diagrams, charts, pictures, films, and written directions. These students will value to-do lists, assignment logs, and written notes. Many of these techniques, however, also benefit kinesthetic learners.

Kinesthetic Learners
Some students learn through kinesthetic means: touching, feeling, experiencing the material at hand.
They gain information fastest when participating in a science lab, drama presentation, skit, field trip, dance, or other active activity.
