RED RIBBON WEEK
Red Ribbon
Week is an alcohol, tobacco and other drug and violence
prevention awareness campaign observed annually in October. This year, Red
Ribbon Week will be celebrated at Mann during the week of October 25, 2010.
Each day, students & staff will participate in a theme to help remind us all
to live a drug-free, healthy lifestyle.
THE HISTORY OF RED RIBBON WEEK
Red Ribbon Week is celebrated in honor
of Enrique "Kiki" Camarena. Kiki Camarena worked for the Drug Enforcement
Administration (DEA). He went to work undercover in Mexico investigating a
major drug cartel believed to include officers in the Mexican army, police,
and government. On Feb. 7, 1985, Camarena was kidnapped. One month later,
his body was found and he had been tortured to death.
In honor of his memory and his battle
against illegal drugs, friends began wearing red badges of satin. The first
nationwide Red Ribbon Campaign began in 1988.
