LPA Dance - “We Are Who We Are” – February 16th:

» LPA Assembly – Tuesday, February 14th, 8:50 a.m.

» LPA Dance – 9:00 – 11:00 p.m. in the KHS Cafeteria.

» Tickets are $10 each and t-shirts are $5 each. Tickets will be sold the week of the dance, February 13th-16th, during 3rd block. No sales will be made after 1:10 on Thursday, February 16th. Plan ahead and buy your ticket early!

» Dance guest forms are available in the main office and must be returned completed to Mrs. Odom prior to purchasing a ticket.

» All fees and fines must be paid before purchasing tickets. See Mrs. Miller in the Financial office to take care of those.

» You MUST be in attendance all day Thursday, February 16th in order to attend the dance that night. If you have an appointment scheduled that day, it needs to be rescheduled! If it cannot be rescheduled, then your parent must contact Mrs. Odom to obtain prior approval for your absence by Wednesday, February 15th

All Students:

» Tryout packets for Golden Girls Poms for next school year are now available in the Main office.

» Interested in traveling to Spain and Italy, June 2013??? Come to an informational meeting Thursday night at 7:00 pm in room 202.

» Attention All Girls: Mrs. Stephens would like to announce that Kickapoo is starting a new club called Girls 4 Good, and we will be having an informational meeting this Friday before and after school. Please come to room 212 at 7:30 or at 3:10 to learn about how you can become a more independent female and become a positive influence to others.

» Any student who would like to join Youth Against Cancer, please see Mr. Wilbur.

» If you want to be a part of the Springfield All-Youth Relay for Life, please see Mr. Wilbur, Erica Ewing, Mandy Morgan or Heather McKinney.

» Future Peer Mediators: If you are interested in becoming a Peer Mediator for next year please pick up an application in either Ms. Bernhard’s room S102 or Mrs. Jansen’s room S204. All applications need to be turned in by February 10th so we can hand out invitations for try-outs. Those selected for the final cut will have a training/tryout on February 17th from 12:15-3:15 pm. This is MANDATORY in order to become a mediator for next year.

» Springfield Public Schools will be hosting a FAFSA Frenzy event on February 12, 2012 from 2:00 – 4:00 pm at Central High School. This is a free event for students and parents who would like to receive professional, one-on-one help filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Attending the FAFSA Frenzy will allow students and their parents to meet with financial aid advisors who will be available to assist with filling out required financial aid forms. Students can also enter for a chance to win one of eight $500 scholarships. Please contact the A+ Office with questions or to get a copy of the worksheet that will help you to have all the necessary information needed to complete the FAFSA.

» Anyone interested in running for 2012-13 President must attend a mandatory meeting Monday at 7:30 or 2:50 in room 109.

» “Poo Grams”!!! Order a Valentine ‘Poo Gram’! ‘Poo’ Grams will be sold on Monday, February 13th during all lunch breaks. You can buy them and deliver them yourself or have them delivered during lunch on Tuesday, February 14th. The Poo Gram consists of a Russell Stover Chocolate Truffle and a card. Cash & Carry $1.00 or Delivered for $2.00.

» Central High School will be hosting an exhibition basketball game featuring the Harlem Ambassadors on Monday, February 13th. The game is being put on by the National Alliance on Mental Illness of Southwest Missouri.

» Attention all boys who want to play tennis this spring: there will be a brief but mandatory informational meeting on February 14th at 3:00 in the library classroom. Season begins first practice on February 27th. Be prepared to earn your spot on the roster.

» Attention All Boys interested in playing Baseball this spring: there will be a MANDATORY meeting Wednesday at 7:15 am in room 112. Important information and event calendar will be handed out. Any questions contact Coach Howser.

» MARDIGRAMS!!! Send your BFF and special friends a Mardigram to be delivered with BEADS and more on Mardi Gras!! The French Club will be selling them during lunches on the 15th and 16th of February.

» AP Testing: AP Testing order forms will be available soon. You may pick up an informational booklet in the main office showing dates and the tests given. Testing dates will be May 7-11th and May 14-18th. Cost of the exams will be $87.00 with Free/Reduced Lunch students able to test at a very reduced fee. Order forms will be due on March 15th, before Spring Break. Watch for additional information to be given in mid February.

» Attention anyone interested in trying out for the 2012-2013 Cheerleading squads: Tryout packets will be available in the main office on February 21st. A current physical must be on file before you can try out.

Fundraisers:

Key Club will be holding a fundraiser at Fuddruckers on Thursday, February 9th from 4:30 - 8:30. Please come out and support our service organization and bring a flier or show them this invitation. Tips will be donated to the Eliminate Project, an international initiative to vaccinate mothers and babies for tetanus.

Coach Howard Bell, Head Baseball Coach from Glendale High School, has been diagnosed with ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis), also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease which is, at this time, an incurable neuromuscular disease. Glendale is hosting some fundraisers to benefit the Bell family. The theme is Help Coach Bell Strike Out ALS.
Monday, February 6: GHS/KHS Girls Basketball game: Silent Auction, pass the bucket, selling T-Shirts and wrist bands.
Sunday, February 12: Appleby’s is hosting a Pancake Breakfast from 7:00am-10:am. Tickets are $5.00 from any area baseball coach or at the door. (We are hoping to have a couple of items to raffle that day)

From the Counselors:

The February Scholarship bulletin, which includes the Community Foundation of the Ozarks scholarship, is now ready in the Counseling Office and online.

2012 BEST BUY SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM - $1,000 scholarships for any 9 – 12 grade student who plans to attend post-secondary education, have solid grades and are involved in community service or work experience. Deadline is February 15th. Apply online at: http://www.bestbuy-communityrelations.com/scholarship.htm

Kickapoo High School Sophomore Pilgrimage – annual event held in Jefferson City at the State Capital. Kickapoo may send one representative. Applications in counseling office. They need to be turned in to Mrs. Sibet by Thursday, February 16, 2012.

Missouri Boys State: Any 11th grade male interested in applying to Missouri Boys State can find information in the counseling center. Missouri Boys State is a highly interactive educational program that teaches young men the duties, privileges, responsibilities, and rights of American citizenship. Applications are due to the counseling center by February 22, 2012.

MAHEC – Aces Jumpstart – Saturday, February 25, 2012 from 8:30am – 3:30 pm. Cost is $30 & lunch is provided. See counseling office for forms.

I LOVE NURSING DAY – College Fair February 25, 2012 from 11:00 am – 1:00 pm. At St. John’s/SBU College of Nursing. See counseling office for details.

Southwest Missouri Area Health Education Center – (MAHEC) – Various programs/workshops. See counseling office for details.

Missouri State University Agricultural Department will host a two day seminar for minority 9th, 10th and 11th grade students on June 7th and 8th. This seminar is for minority students interested in Agriculture and learning about Financial Aid, Career Planning, and Public Speaking. You can download an application from the Springfield Public Schools Office of Cultural Diversity website or visit your counseling center for more information. The deadline for applications is February 29th.

25th Annual Missouri State Youth Government Day - April 10th, 2012, at the Missouri State Capital. See the Counseling Office for details and to sign up. Cost is $7. Deadline to sign up is March 1.

Evangel University: Up to 30 applicants who have completed the A+ program will be awarded $1,000 per year. Renewable with a 3.0 GPA. Application deadline is March 1, 2012. www.evangel.edu

HIGH SCHOOL MINI MEDICAL SCHOOL – The University of Missouri School of Medicine will again offer a unique summer experience for high school students interested in careers in medicine. The 14th annual High School Mini Medical School is a one-week experience designed to give students a preview of medical school. The program is intended for students who will begin their senior year in the fall of 2012 and who want to explore the career of a physician. The cost is $525 per session with some scholarships available for financial need. The deadline to apply is March 1st, 2012. Apply online at http://medicine.missouri.edu/admissions/minimed.php

Missouri Girls State: Any 11th grade female interested in applying to Missouri Girls State can find an application in the counseling center. Missouri Girls State is an intensive week of government study and Americanism training sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary. Missouri Girls State will be held June 24-30, 2012 at the University of Central Missouri. Applications are to be received by mail no later than March 1st and interviews will be held March 3rd at the American Legion Post.

Missouri State University’s MISSOURI INNOVATION ACADEMY – This year’s Academy will be held from June 10th through June 30th. Tuition for the three week Academy is $1,500. Applications are available online at www.missouristate.edu/mia - See counseling office for details. Scholarships are available!!!

Club Announcements:

National Art Society Members: Please pay your $25 fee ASAP so Mrs. Dunn can order graduation cords and budget for the honorary luncheon.

FBLA will have a very important meeting in room 235 at 7:20 a.m. or 2:55 p.m. this Thursday!!

Science Olympiad: Will have a MANDATORY meeting in Mr. Moore’s room Friday right after school.

Automated Aquaponics! This ½ credit science research & design course will meet after school on Mondays to build a robotic aquaponics device. This is a hands-on, student led course. Thinking and innovation are required, note-taking and tests are not! See Mr. Moore in room S104 for a syllabus!

FCCLA: All members should plan to meet Tuesday after school in room 102 at 3:00 to discuss upcoming activities.

S.A.D.D. will meet Tuesday after school in room 108.
