Dear Jarrett Community, The 2012-2013 school year is right around
the corner. The Jarrett staff is committed
to working
with you and we know parents/guardians play
a critical role in a child’s educational
success. Keeping you informed has been and continues
to be an important focus. Here are some highlights.
Once again, Jarrett is under construction
this summer. The work includes replacing
damaged
masonry units, re-anchoring veneers, cleaning
masonry
surfaces and re-pointing mortar joints at
a cost of $509,788. Wow, it is going
to look
fantastic
for a 91-year-old building!
We are very excited for the staff, students,
parents and community to be proud of the
school, not only on the outside, but what’s
happening on the inside as well. Jarrett
has been involved
in two innovative initiatives the past year. The
first, called Mastery Learning, which was initiated
at the 6th grade level last
year;
will move to 7th grade the 2012-2013 school
year;
and to 8th grade the following year, improves
the instructional approach to help meet
all students’ academic
goals in communication arts and math. The
sixth grade team worked diligently implementing
this
system. For more information about Mastery
Learning visit our website..
The
second school-wide initiative is Arts Integration.
Teachers have been going
to workshops in Washington
D.C. and in Springfield, provided by
the Kennedy Center, as part of their
Professional
Development
at Jarrett. The Kennedy Center’s
definition for Arts Integration is an
approach to teaching
by using art forms to engage students
in a creative process, while connecting
these art forms with
other subject areas. For more information
about Arts Integration visit our website
or http://artsedge.kennedy-center.org.
As
faculty and staff are continuing to learn and
work hard to provide the
best education
possible for all students, your involvement
in your student’s
education at Jarrett is just as important.
One of the best ways to become involved
is by joining
our PTSA. For more information about
joining, visit the PTSA
Yahoo group
site and/or Facebook (need
to be signed into Facebook for the link to work, or search
for
Jarrett Middle School PTSA)
It is a great privilege and honor to
be the principal at Jarrett. I’m looking
forward to the upcoming school year and getting reacquainted with each and every
student. If you have any questions, please email me at twise@spsmail.org or call
523-6600. Enjoy the rest of your summer.
Sincerely,
Teresa Wise, Principal, Jarrett Middle.
