Nurse's Notes

Welcome From Your School Nurse

Welcome to a new year in your child’s education!  Trusting someone else to care for your child during their time away from you is often a scary situation for many parents.  I am hoping to relieve some of your concerns and anxiety by outlining some basic health guidelines observed during school hours.

Listed below are the policies adopted by the Springfield Public Schools and what we are guided by for recommending your child stay home:

Fever:  100 degrees or greater.  NO FEVER FOR 24 HOURS without medicine.
            Vomiting:   None for 24 hours.
            Diarrhea:   None for 24 hours.
Strep throat:  24 hours of antibiotic therapy and fever free for 24 hours.
Rash:      A note from a physician is required before returning to class if unsure of
                            causing agent.
Pinkeye:  No crusting or draining from the eye upon awakening and a minimum
of 24 hours of antibiotic treatment OR a note from your physician.

Prescription medicine:
If it is necessary to administer medicine during the school day, an adult must bring the medicine to the school and complete necessary forms prior to the nurse administering it.  It will need to be in the original container and labeled by the pharmacy.  Medicine to be given “three times a day” is best given before school, after school, and bedtime.  Any remaining medicine must be picked up by an adult as children are NOT allowed to transport medicine of any type.  (This is in accordance with the Safe School Act).

Over-the-counter medicine:
Cough drops, Carmex, Tylenol, decongestants, etc also follow the above guidelines.  In addition they require a physician’s order if they are to be given more than 3 days during the school year.

If you have any questions regarding your child’s attendance in relation to an illness, please feel free to call and visit with the school nurse.  Many times the nurse will be able to let you know “what is going around” and can help in your decision whether to have your child remain home or to send them to school.

Immunizations:
Students must have immunizations up-to-date before starting school!!!!!!

We look forward to an exciting school year with your family!
