LINDA LUKE
LIBRARIAN OF
THE YEAR AWARD

The
Linda Luke Librarian of the Year Award was established in 1997 by Dr. Robert
H. Luke and the many friends who were influenced by Linda during her life. Linda
Luke (1947-1997) touched thousands of students lives during her service
as librarian and teacher at Hickory Hills and Disney Elementary Schools
spanning nearly 10 years. A sculpture of Linda stands in the Disney Library
in her memory.
Qualifications
for the award include characteristics of Linda Luke in her work with students
of Springfield Public Schools:
- A librarian who demonstrates an attitude which emanates caring and concern
as well as a deep commitment for his or her work.
- A librarian who supports the teaching and learning process by providing
a library climate that causes students and teachers to maximize available
resources.
- A librarian who has orchestrated an innovative project at the building
level.
The recipient
of the award will receive a cash gift for the Linda Luke Librarian Fund
established by Dr. Luke with the Springfield Public Schools Foundation.
Librarians are nominated by school personnel. Nomination forms are distributed
to all schools annually by the Foundation Office. The final selection is determined by a committee
of readers comprised of school and community people formed by the Foundation
Office. The winner was announced on Friday, April 11 at Pl View Library and
shown on 6 pm KOLR News.
The first
recipient of the award was Buanna Beach, librarian at Pleasant View/Truman
Elementary Schools. The second recipient of Librarian of the Year was Linda Burrell,
Librarian of Carver Middle School. The third recipient of Librarian of
the Year was Joyce Needham, Librarian, Sequiota/Weller Elementary Schools. The
fourth recipient of Librarian of the Year was Penny Lane,
Librarian of Bowerman/Robberson Elementary Schools. The fifth recipient of
Librarian of the Year was Robin Cashman,Librarian at Reed Middle School.
The sixth recipient of Librarian of the Year is
Julie Mahaffey, Librarian of
Plesant View Middle School. The seventh recipient of Librarian of the Year was Kristie
Gallion, Librarian of Mark Twain/York. The eighth recipient of Librarian of
the Year was Teresa Young, Librarian of Westport Elementary. The
ninth year recipients of Librarian of the Year was shared between Marklyn
Cotter and John Reinert of Parkview High School. The tenth
recipients of the Librarian of the Year award was shared between Deborah Davis
and Debbie Dick of Kickapoo High School.
Margaret Butler of Cherokee
Middle School was named the Librarian of the Year as the 11th recipient of this
award. Our only two-time winner, Teresa Young, now of Study Middle school,
is both the eighth and twelfth year winner. Amy Price of Wilson's
Creek is the lucky 13th Media Specialist honored with this award. A second two
time winner (6th and 14th), from Pleasant View Middle School, is Julie
Mahaffey.
