Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s),

Welcome to Hillcrest High School’s activity/athletic program. We hope that your decision to take advantage of this portion of our co-curricular program will be educational, rewarding, and challenging. This handout is given to you so that you might be more familiar with the opportunities for your student as well as the guidelines and expectations for coaches, students, parents, and spectators.

We believe that our interscholastic activities are an important supplement to the secondary curricular program and offer students a connection to school that improves student attendance, grades, and graduation rates. Furthermore, experiences within the activities program contribute to the development of learning skills, and emotional patterns that enable the student to make maximum use of his/her education. It is our hope that students who take advantage of extracurricular opportunities acquire additional knowledge, skills, maturity, as well as an understanding of good citizenship.

Guidelines for Athletic Participation

Citizenship Standards

Each student is required to have a citizenship card on file at the school. This card, which must be signed by parents, stipulates minimum citizenship standards that all students within the Springfield Public Schools district must abide by (coaches may have more stringent policies than the citizenship card). The following statements are brief highlights of the citizenship card, and the student and parent should read the card in its entirety before signing.

Protecting Your Eligibility

Hillcrest students are guided by the rules and regulations of the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA). MSHSAA requires Hillcrest students to be enrolled in at least 5 classes per semester. Students involved in MSHSAA guided activities should never drop a course without checking with their coach and counselor. As previously mentioned students must pass at least five of seven classes in the previous semester in order to be academically eligible. In some cases one credit of summer school can help make a student eligible.

Care of School Equipment

It is important to note that the student in whose name the equipment was checked out must pay for any equipment lost or stolen. School equipment should only be used for its intended purposes as directed by coaches or sponsors.

Hillcrest High School, Springfield Public Schools, and the MSHSAA continue to place an emphasis on sportsmanship. The Hillcrest High School activities/athletic program is committed to upholding the highest standards of sportsmanship at school events. We have modeled much of what we do after a program called “Pursuing Victory With Honor.” This program emphasizes the Six Pillars of Character (trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship) on and off the playing field. This is a successful nationwide program, which reinforces the need for sportsmanship in educational athletics.

As a society, we are constantly bombarded with the message that winning is everything. Not everyone can win all their games or finish first every time. However, everyone can practice the Golden Rule –treating others the way they themselves would like to be treated—and adhere to the Six Pillars of Character.

Please take a few moments to review the attached guidelines for behavior, describing the example we expect our spectators to set at athletic events. As a representative of ours, your actions are scrutinized by family and friends, opposing fans, the local community and the media, and they reflect back on us. Displays of good sportsmanship will say positive things about you and our school, and hopefully remind us all that in the end, sport is meant to be fun.

We look forward to serving you, and appreciate your continued support.
