Traffic Safety

The city has
a safe walking manual and walking maps available for students
and parents. The following statement appears in
that manual:
“The
R-12 School District is responsible for insuring that a copy
of the Recommended School Walking Map is distributed
to each school at the beginning of each school year. The map
should be posted in a conspicuous place at each school. Classroom
instruction should be given on general pedestrian safety rules.
The principal of each school will inform parents that the school
walking route maps are maintained and available online and
offer to provide a paper copy of the walking route map for
their school upon request.”
Information
about the walking maps can be found here.

Safety Drills
Storm
Drills are held once each quarter. During this time,
students go to their safe spot and duck and cover. Students
are expected to remain quiet so they can hear instructions.
In
Place Shelter Drills are held three times each year. During
this time, teachers lock their classroom doors and students
assume their positions away from all windows/doors.
Fire
Drills are held 10 times each year. As soon as the students
hear the alarm, they follow their teacher to their designated
area outside. Teachers take roll. The secretary keeps track
of the evacuation times and turns those in to the School Safety
Office.
