DECA
(An Association of Marketing Students) Mrs. Morris – Room

DECA is a co-curricular club attached to the Marketing
classes at Glendale, introducing students to the world
of work by preparing emerging leaders and entrepreneurs
in marketing, finance, hospitality and management. We stand
for competence, innovation, integrity and teamwork. Through
a combination of classroom and work experience, students
can ease into the job market with experience and confidence.

Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) – Mrs.
D. Smith – Room 305
Students interested in majoring in Business in college
and/or owning their own business someday will find their
niche in FBLA. The chapter gives students a chance to strengthen
their leadership skills, provide an opportunity to network
with business leaders in the community, and allows the
sharing of ideas, talents and energy in worthwhile community
service projects and competition with students from other
schools at the district, state and national levels. There
are also opportunities for scholarship from the state and
national levels of this organization.
Future
Teachers of America (FTA) – Mrs. Hickory – Room
306
FTA provides opportunities to learn about teaching and
to cultivate the qualities essential in a good teacher
to develop the role of leadership and to provide experience
related to teaching. This club facilitates awareness of
the pros and cons of teaching, explores the courses necessary
for teaching degree, and discusses the current need of
teachers in a variety of fields. Through the Cadet Teacher
class, members are able to gain first hand experience and
receive high school credit hours by assisting grade school
teachers. Membership is open to anyone interested in a
teaching career.
Cadet
Teaching (Seniors only) – Mrs. Hickory/Miss
Cowan – Room 306/213
This class is a program designed to help students who are
interested in entering the teaching profession. Students
work in elementary and middle schools with a classroom
teacher in order to gain understanding of problems a teacher
faces and how these problems may be resolved. Students
must be a member of FTA (Future Teachers of America) and
have a 3.0 GPA or above. High school credit is earned.
Teacher
Mentoring (Seniors only) – Mrs. Hunsaker – Room
235
This class is designed for students who want to learn about
the job of being a teacher. The student will learn by observing
and performing many of the duties of a teacher. This opportunity
will expand the student’s career interest about the
teaching field and give the student first-hand information
about how the school works from a teacher’s perspective.
Class enrollment is through your counselor. High school
credit is earned.
Medical
Explorers – Community Sponsor: Cox
Medical Systems, Coordinator, Veronica Torres,
phone 269-5954. Are you interested in the medical
field, learning more about health care, or simply
want to make a difference in your community? Join
Cox Health Medical Explorers. Medical Explorers
are students 14 and up who can choose to sign up
at monthly meetings for observation rotations within
the hospital. At each meeting, snacks are provided
and a speaker shares his/her experiences as a healthcare
professional and answers questions. If you are
interested in joining, contact Coordinator, Veronica
Torres , submit a copy of your last report card,
a letter of recommendation, and pay a $10 joining
fee. You can reach Ms. Torres by e-mail at veronica.torres
@coxhealth.com. This is not a SPS club activity,
but provides a great opportunity for students interested
in the medical profession.
Medical
Explorers – Community Sponsor: St.

The program would be very similar to the Cox Medical
Explorers and meets the 2nd Tuesday of each month
at 6:30 p.m. at the Hammons Heart Institute Auditorium
Room. Please contact the coordinator before attending
if you are interested. This is not a SPS club activity,
but provides a great opportunity for students interested
in the medical profession.
Speech
and Debate – Mr. Jordan – Room 201
Through this program, students learn the fundamental styles,
concepts and skills of speeches and the art of debate.
Introductory speech is open to all students. Advanced speech
(Debate and Advanced Debate) is open to students who will
be members of competitive speech and debate squad. By taking
advanced speech, students are allowed to concentrate on
two or three specific areas of his/her choice through participation
in interscholastic speech and debate tournaments. Advanced
speech students are required to participate in a minimum
number of speech tournaments to help further his/her skills.
Youth
Against Cancer (YAC) – Mrs.
Coyeatte Ewing– Guidance Office –
A collaboration of high school students, faculty and staff
dedicated to eliminating cancer by initiating and supporting
American Cancer Society programs in high school communities:
Cancer Education, Relay for Life and Survivorship.
