Prevention Techniques: Use These to be Proactive to Help Your Student Not to Become Involved with Substance Abuse

  • Practice good communication with your adolescent
  • Get involved in your adolescent's life
  • Make clear rules and enforce them with consistency and appropriate consequences
  • Be a positive role model
  • Teach your child to choose friends wisely
  • Media inundates us with false information in regard to substances such as alcohol, tobacco, and marijuana. Use these opportunities to discuss inconsistencies if you see them
  • Know who, what, where, when
  • Be caring without being restrictive. You can allow your student to attend things, just make sure they have a plan if they need to get out of a bad situation (i.e. do they know who to call if they need to get home right away? Do they have money for a cab ride if their friends will not go with them?)
  • A Chemical is a Chemical: Do not rationalize what you consider "minor" drug usage such as tobacco or alcohol. Set up consequences and enforce them, let your child know you do not approve of substance use.
  • Do not rescue your student from consequences. Rescuing a student only teaches them that they can get away with their behaviors.
