Intervention Techniques

What do I do if my adolescent is already experimenting with alcohol drugs or I am recognizing warning signs??

  • DO NOT PANIC!! Having an angry reaction, being threatening or too intense can shut down any communication you may be able to have with your teen. Shaming a teen for a behavior only lowers their self-esteem and increases the chances they will use again.
  • Look at criteria/signs and symptoms and see where your student's usage fits in.
  • If your student is in an "experimental phase" of substance use, some education may be al that is needed. Get support from professionals and community resources if you need help. Make sure that you set up appropriate consequences and follow through if their using behavior continues (i.e. I need you to know that if you chose to continue with this behavior, you will make the choice that you need treatment).
  • If you feel your student is in a substance abuse phase (use is affecting functioning in important life areas), seek help.
