What are the Categories
of Abused Drugs?

  • Stimulants: produces an increase in the physical or mental activity of the person.
    -Examples: Caffeine, nicotine, methamphetamine, cocaine
  • Depressants: produces a decrease in physical or mental activity of the person.
    -Example: Alcohol, benzodiazepines (Xanax, Valium, other RX pills), most types of opiates (Morphine, Heroin, OxyContin, Hydrocodone, Percaset).
  • Hallucinogens: produces false sensations/perceptions
    -Examples: Marijuana, LSD, mushrooms
    -Ectasy (X) is a combination of hallucinogens and amphetamines

Marijuana is the most commonly abused illegal drug.
