What is Substance Abuse?
Substance
abuse among adolescents is a growing concern
in our community, the effects of which can
lead to serious problems for the adolescent,
including but not limited to health problems,
school performance and academic declines, school
drop out, problems with the legal system, and
in extreme cases death or serious health complications.

What
is Substance Abuse?
Substance
abuse is defined by the DSM-IV as a maladaptive
pattern of substance use leading to clinically
significant impairment or distress, as manifested
by one or more of the following, occurring
within a 12 month period.
- Recurrent
substance use resulting in a failure to fulfill
major role obligations at work, school, or
home.
- Recurrent
substance use in situations in which it is
physically hazardous (i.e. driving an automobile
or operating machinery when impaired by a
substance).
- Recurrent
substance-related legal problems.
- Continued
substance use despite having persistent or
recurrent social or interpersonal problems
caused or exacerbated by the effects of substance
abuse.
