Since you are now a criminal in the seventeenth century, you will need to do a  little research about that time period.
You will learn about Puritan beliefs and the different types of crimes and punishments.
 As  said before, the crime you have committed and the punishment  you will receive is up to you.
After you have finished researching, you will need to write a letter addressed to your teacher.

    Read and use some of the following list of resource links for your research.  You must read the first article ("Crime and Punishment - Puritan Justice"), and then select at least one of the other pages to read.  The information contained in them will enable you to complete Part One of this task:

YOUR TASK - Task 1, Part 1

You will include the following in your letter:
  • What crime did you commit? Why?
  • What punishment did you receive?
  • What did it feel like being publicly shamed in front of the whole town?
  • Were objects thrown at you? What were they?
  • Did the people of the town treat you differently? In what way?
  • Do you think the punishment you received was effective? Why or why not?
  • Will you commit that crime again?

  •  Date
  • Inside adddress
  • Salutation
  • Body
  • Complimentary close
  • Signature
  • Typed Name

  Remember, you are in the seventeenth century, so keep this in mind when you write your letter.
 
To create your letter:
  • Go to Start (lower left side of the computer)
  • Click on Programs, then Microsoft Office
  • Open Microsoft Word
  • Compose your letter
  • Be sure to save your letter to your student folder (S: drive) so you can edit if necessary
  • Once you are satisfied with your letter, print it and turn it in.  Be sure your name is on the letter.



EVALUATION

Grading rubric:
The letter you write will be worth 25 points
  • 10 points for the amount of detail that is included
  •   5 points for form, punctuation, and spelling
  •   5 points for correct factual information (concerning the punishment and crime)
  •   5 points for creativity
