Mission: Glendale High School promotes excellence in academics and character

Attention students:  Students are not to be wearing hats or any type of head covering once they have arrived inside the school building.  This includes but is not limited to:
Ball caps Ski hats Knit caps Hoodies Berets Scarves Crocheted hats
Another Reminder:  Students who are wearing bandanas will be asked to remove them.
Violations of this policy will result in a referral for Defiance of Authority and appropriate consequences will result.

Friday night the JV and Varsity Boys Basketball teams will be at home playing Parkview, freshman game time is 5:00, JV and Varsity will follow. The Freshman Boys Basketball team will be playing at home against Central tonight in the City tournament, game time is 5:30.

Tonight the Lady Falcons take on another conference opponent,  playing Parkview at Parkview - the JV game starts at 6:00 and the Varsity game at 7:30 - we would love to have another great crowd tonight at Parkview!!  Come on out and enjoy the game.

National School Counseling Week, sponsored by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA), will be celebrated February 6 – 1 0, 201 2. School counselors work with all students to help them remove barriers to learning by addressing academic concerns, personal/social skills and career awareness. Remember to extend your appreciation to all GHS Counselors this week.

Girls Service Society will collect recycling after school TODAY. We need as many people as possible, so please meet in Miss Cowan’s room (210).

Science Olympiad team members should come to Mr. Yonke’s room after school Thursday for final competition schedules. Permission slips must be returned Friday.

Attention Seniors: The prom committee will have a brief meeting this Thursday either before school at 7:20 or after school at 3:00 in room 209. If you cannot attend please see Ms. Hall or Ms. Norcross for important information regarding the meeting. Attendance is mandatory in order to be dismissed to decorate the day of the dance.

Any Junior wanting to run for Student Body Officer, the last change to attend the mandatory meeting is today after school at 3:00pm

Come to FCA this Friday in the main gym at 7:13. Senior Josh Bunselmeyer will be speaking!! See you there!

Do you have gently worn jeans you need to get rid of? Aeropostale and DoSomething.org present Teens for Jeans, an event where you can help thousands of homeless teens by donating your old jeans. Please bring your used jeans (any brand) to the Teens for Jeans bin in the cafeteria now through February 12, and also get a coupon for some new jeans at Aeropostale. See Drew Viguet for details.

You will have the opportunity to sign up to be a Relay for Life TEAM CAPTAIN next week, Tuesday, Feb. 14. Just stop by the table during lunch where a Youth Against Cancer officer will help you get registered.

SENIORS!  Want free help filling out the FAFSA?  Want to enter a drawing for 1 of 8 $500 college scholarships?  Attend FAFSA FRENZY on Sunday, February 12.  Stop by Room 104 or the Guidance Center for information on where it’s being held and what to bring.

The Southwest Regional Poetry Out Loud competition will be held on February 21 at 6:30 p.m. at the Creamery Arts Center downtown. Come and watch Glendale’s own Kim Woodman compete for a place at the state competition.

Time is running out! The Gateway Party is coming!  You need to have read three of the nominated Gateway titles by February 24th.  First semester communication arts students should have already reported on the three books they read.  Second semester communication arts students will be reporting on the books they read the last week of February. 

All athletes need to condition in order to perform! Track Pre-Season is in full swing. Now is the time to get into the physical condition that matters for your sports. Get involved in agility, get involved in strength, get involved in endurance and stamina. Come out to Track and make yourself better than you are.

FCCLA is holding a children’s book drive. Please bring in any new or used children’s books and they will be donated to Bissett elementary school students as part of a community outreach project. Bring books to Room 237 before or after school.

Are you planning on signing up for a weighted English course next year? Don’t forget that you need to complete the English Honors contract and get an English teacher to sign off on it. You only have a few more days to get this taken care of before your scheduling information is due. So, stop by your teacher’s classroom before or after school this week to take care of this special paperwork.

Attention students, please use student parking in the south parking. The lot closest to the band room is designated for staff only parking. Violators will receive tickets and could be towed at their expense. Thanks for your cooperation regarding this matter.

Per Board of Education Policy, all students and staff members in High School buildings are required to properly display and wear their ID Badges at all times during the school day. While ID Badges may seem to be a nuisance, they do provide assistance in identifying who should be in the building, thus assisting in maintaining a safe environment. Please remember to comply with this policy, as students and staff members failing to properly display their ID Badges may be subject to disciplinary actions. Thanks for your cooperation regarding this matter.

College visits must be approved by Mr. Marsh, Assistant Principal, one week prior to making the visit.  Confirmation must be faxed to Glendale from the Office of Admissions with the name of the contact person that hosted the visit.  The Dept. of Sec. & Elem. Education requires this visit to be recorded as an absence however the absence will not count against any attendance incentives at Glendale.

If you need a little help in your science class, tutoring is available after school every Thursday in room 273 or 278. You can make arrangements with your science teacher or you can just drop in--Mrs. Lines or Mrs. McGrane will be happy to lend a hand.

Students/Parents: Please note that per HB 300 regulations, MSHSAA has released the first annual Interscholastic Youth Sports Brain Injury Report regarding the impact of student athlete concussions and head injuries and the efforts that have been made to minimize damages from school sports injuries on the MSHSAA website.  This report is located by going to www.mshsaa.org and then going to the HOME page.

ANNOUNCEMENT FROM GUIDANCE:

Attention Current Junior Boys: If you are interested in applying for Boys State, you may pick up the application instructions in the Guidance Office.

Attention students that have received a letter of invitation to apply for the Missouri Scholars Academy be sure you have your test permission form with your application.  There are extras in the guidance office, please see Mrs. Feind.

ATTENTION COLLEGE BOUND SENIORS:  Want free help filing your FAFSA?  Stop by Room 104 or the Guidance Center to receive a free gift and more information!  Many colleges require that students file the FAFSA to see if they qualify for grant money for college.  All SPS Seniors and their parents are invited to this free event which allows students and their parents to meet one-on-one with advisors who can help fill out the form. As an added bonus for attending FAFSA Frenzy, students can enter to win one of eight $500 scholarships—just for attending. FAFSA FRENZY will be held on February 12, 2012 from 2–4 pm at Central High School.

Are you interested in being in the Missouri State Highway Patrol?  Are you 16-18 years old?  Please see Mrs. White for information on the 2012 Cadet Academy.  Deadline is Feb. 15. 

Missouri State University Agricultural Department will host a two day seminar for minority 9 th, 10 th, and 11 th grade students on June 7 and 8.  This seminar is for minority students interested in Agriculture and learning about Financial Aid, Career Planning, and Public Speaking .  You can download an application from the Springfield Public Schools Office of Cultural Diversity website or visit your counseling center for more information.  The deadline for applications is February 29.

ANNOUNCEMENT FROM SCHOOL POLICE:

Students, please remember to lock your items up in the locker room areas.  If you do not have a locker with a lock, please contact the office.  It is your responsibility to make sure your items are secured in a locked locker.  The school is not responsible for items left unsecured in the locker room areas.

If you are parking on school property and have not obtained a 2011-12 parking registration sticker, you will receive a discipline referral. The next offense after a referral, will be a city ticket issued by school police. Please understand that registered parking is a Springfield School District Policy for every school campus in the district.

The staff parking areas and fire lanes are being monitored daily. Tickets and referrals are currently being issued for parking in staff assigned parking areas, fire lanes, and drive lanes. Please use the designated student parking areas as there are plenty of spaces available. Thank you for your cooperation in keeping Glendale a safe school. School Police Services

The journalism department has past yearbooks for sale dating from the following years (click here for dates). Purchase price for each classic yearbook is $30. Checks should be made out to: Glendale High School Journalism. Glendale High School cannot guarnatee
availability of all yearbooks, as they will be sold on a first-come, first-serve basis.
