PTA Program Volunteers Needed

Chat-N-Chew
Volunteers participate in a unique program created for 3rd-5th graders that involves meeting with a group of students periodically to discuss a book that is read at home by each member of the group. The book discussions take place during the students’ lunch time. This begins during the 4th quarter.

Community Awareness
In coordination with a few local charities, volunteers organize and promote a school-wide charitable giving drive. This occurs once a year, usually in the month of November.

Cultural Arts
This committee organizes and directs a fun educational event for the students and teachers that includes the arts, music and culture of a people, either past or present. Previous years events included:

May 2006 - Russian Kaleidoscope
April 2005 - Passport to Greece
April 2004 - Lewis & Clark, The anniversary of the Corp of Discovery

Disney Buddies
Under the supervision of a teacher, volunteers tutor students in reading, writing and math. This requires a time commitment of at least 30 minutes per week from October through the end of the school year.

Fifth Grade Banquet
This committee is made up of fifth grade parents who work together to plan the annual 5th gade party and DARE graduation that take place in May.

Fall Festival
Volunteers help the chairperson plan and organize this event. Past themes have included a sock hop, disco and fall carnival. This is a GREAT opportunity to meet and work with lots of creative people, and OUR KIDS LOVE THE FUN!

Family Spring Fling
Volunteers assist the chairperson in organizing an exciting social event for Disney families which includes games, activities and food stand. This event takes place in the spring.

Health and Safety (Health Fair)
Volunteers on this committee will assist the school nurse in organizing and promoting events that promote and inform students about personal safety and maintaining good health. Specifically, this committee assists with the Disney Student Health Fair. Volunteers assist the school nurse and committee chairperson in providing students information about good health as well as assisting with vision screenings, weight measurement, blood pressure, dental exams and other health screenings during this one day event that takes place during the day at school. Volunteers can chose from a variety of shifts and areas in which to work.

Reflections
Volunteers assist the chairperson in organizing and submitting students work in the areas of photography, music, drawing, and story writing to the annual Reflections contest open to all students. Winners are selected at local, state and national levels. Specific duties of this committee include:

  • Informing the school about the contest (theme, dates, rules, categories). There is a meeting, held by the citywide Reflections chair that takes place usually in September to go over all of the guidelines.
  • Finding judges for each of the categories (literature, visual arts, music composition, and photography). It is important that the judges not be teachers or parents from Disney.
  • Collecting and submitting the entries to the judges.
  • Displaying all entries at school after getting them back from the judges.
  • Presenting awards to the winners in each category. I did this during an awards breakfast held at Disney on a school morning, with Dr. Utne presenting the ribbons.
  • Submitting all entries to the city wide Reflections contest.
  • Submitting the winning entries (from the Disney contest) to the state competition.

RIF (Reading is Fundamental)
Volunteers assist the chairperson with RIF parties for various grades and with sorting and passing out books to the classrooms. The RIF program is designed to encourage students to read and demonstrate the reading is fun.
