Turning
Over Responsibility to Children Shows Respect
When
we give children responsibilities, we are saying, “We
respect your abilities and judgment. We think you can
do this and trust that you will.” There is almost
no better way to show your regard for a person.
The
key for parents is knowing what responsibilities to give
children and when. One way to do this is to make a checklist
of who is responsible for what.
Sit
and decide with your child which responsibilities he’s
ready to handle on his own: Getting up and going to bed
on time? Fixing breakfast? Care and choice of clothing?
Homework? Keeping room clean? Solving conflicts with
a sister?
Once
you have an agreement, stick to it. Remember: As long
as you are reminding or nagging about a responsibility—or
even doing it sometimes for your child—you are
still assuming that responsibility!
