Dropout Prevention

Reducing the dropout rate is one of the two main goals set by the Board of Education.  The graph below illustrates the progress we have made in reducing the district dropout rate over the past several years.

The Student Support Services Department analyzes district dropout statistics monthly, providing information to schools and assessing the need for additional interventions.  Latest monthly dropout data:

Springfield Public Schools is committed to providing support and interventions to help all students acquire the necessary skills to successfully complete high school.  Information about interventions can be found in the SPS Interventions Handbook. The Department of Student Support Services provides the following:

Credit Recovery – Available at each high school for students who have failed classes and are at risk of not having enough credits to graduate.  Students work independently, in small groups, and on computerized curriculum, as well as individually with the teacher to complete course requirements in the courses they previously failed.  Students should contact their high school counselor for more information.

MO Option – This program provides an alternative means of earning a high school diploma for students who meet certain guidelines, as established by the MO Dept. of Elementary & Secondary Education and Springfield Public Schools.  Students who meet the eligibility criteria may earn a high school diploma after receiving a passing score on the GED and completing other required components of the program.  Fifth year seniors or second semester seniors who are so far behind their cohort groups that earning the required credits for graduation in a reasonable time is not possible, may apply for the MO Option program by contacting their high school counselor. More MO Option Information
