Junior Check Sheet:
Count down to College or Career
- Take the ACT or SAT in June or September. Take multiple times if you want to raise your score. Test dates for this school year can be found at this link.
- Participate in ACT Super Saturday in October.
- Visit Colleges beginning NOW. Narrow your choices to approximately 5 colleges by the end of summer (for tips on college visits, see your counselor).
- Attend the College Fair in mid-October. Apply to all colleges of interest EARLY in the fall of your senior year (WATCH DEADLINES!!).
- Prepare a calendar of key dates, including application deadlines, financial aid deadlines, etc.
- Prepare a resume. If you have not done a significant amount of volunteering, begin today. If you would like credit recorded on your transcript, see Ms. Hilton (90 hours of volunteering at a non-profit, non-religious organization = ½ unit of credit).
- Beginning in early autumn, apply for every scholarship you see. Check the bulletin board in the Counseling Center often for a list of scholarships. Also, check with your colleges of choice for any scholarships they may offer, including departmental scholarships.
- If your choice colleges require an essay, begin carefully writing your essay right away. For tips on writing essays, see your counselor.
- Tell your parents that you will need to complete your FAFSA before April 1 (many colleges have a deadline of March 1). They will need to have their taxes done or estimated in order to complete the FAFSA.
- NEW!! Your parents can now get an estimate of what their expected college contribution will be while you are still in your junior year of high school! Simply go on line to www.fafsa4caster.ed.gov and follow the links for the FAFSA4caster.
- Keep up good attendance and grades. You’re almost to the finish line!!
- Check in the A+ Office ( Room 114) for A+ information. If you will qualify for A+, you must complete 50 hours of Peer Tutoring, keep at least 95% attendance and at least a 2.5 GPA.
- Plan ahead for senior events and expenses:
- Senior pictures (see specifications on reverse side)
- Commencement announcements
- Prom
- Cap and Gown
- Night of Honors
- Senior Picnic
- Baccalaureate
- Project Graduation
- Commencement
