Physical education is concerned with the total personality development of the student. Physical education encourages growth, development, and movement, is an integral part of the educational process and is closely allied with academic progress.

It is most important to understand that physical education may do much more than build muscle and increase skills. Whereas other subjects may talk about the concept of cooperation, hygiene, group interaction, behavior, goal fulfillment, esteem, and self-evaluation, student in physical education live and practice them.

Physical education is a laboratory for controlled inter-personal relationships. Students' progress in Physical Education courses is evaluated by teacher observation of proper attire, positive attitude, and sportsmanship, attainment of basic skills and strategies, and effort to improve.

Physical Education is a required subject for all 7th, and 8th grade Cherokee students. The P.E. program emphasizes fundamentals. All classes are coed with some adjusting during certain activities.

Curriculum:

Physical education will be taught according to the guidelines written for the middle schools within the Springfield R-12 District. The scope and sequence of activities are as the follows:

Physical Fitness

Flag Football
Volleyball
Ultimate Frisbee
Aerial Tennis
Circuit-wt. Training
Softball
Track and Field
Recreation Games
Bowling

Unit Objectives:

After each sport or activity the student will be able to demonstrate:

  • Knowledge of rules, terminology, strategies, and scoring by (1) Passing a written test (2) Participating in games
  • Proper skill techniques by (1) Performing designated skills (2) exhibiting skills in game situation
  • Proper use and care of equipment
  • Proper game etiquette
