Each year at Boyd Elementary we select a school-wide theme for our focus on positive behavior encouragement.
The theme for the 2010-2011 school year is Americana.
Each classroom has a behavior chart on which students can earn daily good choices tallies. By earning these daily tallies students move through 4 behavior classifications, based on the annual theme. With each level of accomplishment the students are given greater freedoms and privileges. They are recognized in advancement ceremonies at lunchtime and can be proud of their ability to handle responsibility.
We talk about types of choices with these words:
1. Principled Choices – The best kind, when we do what is right because it is right
2. Cooperation Choices – Pretty good, going along with what is right when asked
3. Bossing Choices – These don’t work in school, they worry too much about others
4. Anarchy Choices – The worst kind, not in control of own behavior at all
Levels of Responsibility Overview
During daily class meetings students evaluate with the teacher their choices for that day. Each day with positive choices results in a good tally mark on the class tracking chart.
Basic Level – “Citizen” (Begins upon enrollment)
First Level – “Red” (10 good days)
Second Level – “White” (30 good days)
Third Level – “Blue” (50 good days)
Ultimately the purpose of this program is to build a culture of growth and transfer the motivation to make good choices from an external to an internal system. We want to teach the students correct principles and let them govern themselves.
Our school pledge this year:
I am a Citizen
Cooperation makes us one
Independence makes us unique
Tolerance unites our power
I will choose to make a difference!
